2017 Audi S5 Coupe

The launch of Audi’s second-generation A5 is getting ever closer and the German manufacturer has now confirmed its final specification and prices. In December, the two-door coupe will hit the roads while the five-door Sportback will follow in February.

The A5 Coupe will battle with the BMW 4-Series, Infiniti Q60 and Mercedes C-Class coupe for class honours while the A5 Sportback will face competition form the BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe.

Each model gets Audi’s singleframe grille, narrow headlights, smooth body surfaces which feature a defined crease along the flanks and a pronounced boot lip. The Sportback gets a longer wheelbase which improves shoulder and knee room.

The Sportback manages to match the boot capacity of its nearest rival, the 4-Series Gran Coupe of 480-litres, while its rear seats will split and fold 40/20/40 as standard.

With a multi-material body constrcution, the Sportback is the lightest in its class and comes complete with a reengineered suspension setup and new driver aids. At the front, the five-link suspension is redesigned, while at the rear five-link construction replaces the trapezoidal-link previously used.

There are two petrol and three diesel engines to choose from. The two petrols are powered by the same 2.0-litre TFSI four-cylinder engine with either 187bhp or 249bhp. The more powerful 249bhp version also develops 273lb ft of torque, gets from 0-62mph in 5.8 seconds in Coupe guise (6.0 seconds for the Sportback) and onto a top speed of 155mph, returns 47.9mpg and emits 136g/km of CO2.

The diesel range starts with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel which develops 187bhp and 295lb ft of torque, returning 67.3mpg on a combined cycle with CO2 emission of 111g/km. There is also an Ultra version available, which will return 70.6mpg combined and emit 105g/kg of CO2, and gets from 0-62mph in 7.7 seconds.

There are two 3.0-litre V6 diesel engines with outputs of 215bhp / 295lb ft of torque and 282bhp / 457lb ft of torque. The least powerful version will return 58.9mpg and emits 119g/km of CO2, getting from 0-62mph in 6.2 seconds.

Heading the range is the S5 Coupe and S5 Sportback with Quattro all-wheel drive, which is even faster, yet more efficient than before. It gets a new 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 TFSI petrol engine, which develops 349bhp and 369lb ft of torque from 1370 to 4500rpm. Both the Coupe and Sportback share the standstill to 62mph of 4.7 seconds and a limited top speed of 155mph. The Coupe will return 38.2mpg and the Sportback 37.7mpg, while both emit 170g/km of CO2.

Depending on the engine you opt for, available transmissions include a six-speed manual, seven-speed S Tronic and an eight-speed Tiptronic, also available is Quattro all-wheel drive.

The new A5 is available in SE, Sport and S Line trim. SE gets; 17in alloy wheels; LED daytime runing lights; Xenon headlights; three-zone climate control and an electric boot.

Sport adds: 18in alloys; sports suspension; MMI satellite navigation; front and rear LED lights; electrically adjustable front sport seats in leather/alcantara; and LED interior lighting pack.

S line models get; a bodykit; 18in alloy wheels; sports suspension; front sport seats in leather/Alcantara; and LED front and rear lights.

At the top of the range, the S5 gets unique styling including; quad oval tailpipes; aluminium-effect door mirror housings; 19in alloy wheels and aluminium trim around the rear diffuser; air inlets and radiator grille. It also gets sports suspension and specially tuned brakes.

Inside, the S5 comes with Nappa leather; front sports seats which combine lumbar support, pneumatic adjustment and a massage function and MMI satellite navigation.

Audi’s virtual cockpit will be available in the new A5 as well as a high-resolution 12.3in TFT screen. All models get Xenon headlamps, Audi MMI radio with 7.0in display and Bluetooth.

Order books are now open for both models with the two-door coupe arriving in December 2016 and the five-door Sportback in February 2017.
