2017 Audi A5 and S5 Sportback unveiled ahead of launch
The second generation of Audi’s A5 four-door coupe has been unveiled ahead of next year’s launch and will debut at the Paris Motor Show
The second-generation of Audi’s A5 and S5 Sportback has been unveiled ahead launch in early 2017.
Set to make its official debut at the Paris Motor Show later this month, the new Sportback draws heavily on the looks of the A5 coupe that was unveiled earlier this year.
It gets Audi’s trademark singleframe grille, narrow headlights, short overhangs, a flowing bodywork crease along its flanks and a pronounced boot lip at the rear.
With a longer wheelbase, the Sportback benefits from extra space inside including added shoulder (up 11mm) and knee room (up 24mm). The boot has 480 litres of capacity, which is unchanged from the previous model and matches the BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe. The Sportback’s seats will fold and split 40:20:40 as standard.
With a multi-material body, the Sportback is the lightest in its class and comes complete with a reengineered suspension setup and new driver aids. At the front, the five-link suspension is redesigned, while at the rear five-link construction replaces the trapezoidal-link previously used. The A5 Sportback promises to be more entertaining to drive than before.
Powering peak entertainment will be an S5 version. It’s powered by a new 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo engine which develops 349bhp and 369lb ft of torque from 1,370 to 4,500rpm. Standstill to 62mph will take only 4.7 seconds and it’ll push on to a limited top speed of 155mph.
In the A5 Sportback, there are two petrol and three diesel engines to choose from. The two petrols are powered by the same 2.0-litre TFSI engine with either 187bhp or 249bhp.
The diesel range starts with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel which develops 187bhp and 295lb ft of torque, returning 67.3mpg on a combined cycle with CO2 emission of 109g/km.
There are two 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engines with outputs of 215bhp / 295lb ft of torque and 282bhp / 457lb ft of torque. The least powerful version will return 61.4mpg and emits 119g/km of CO2.
Transmissions include a six-speed manual, seven-speed S Tronic and an eight-speed Tiptronic, depending which engine you go for. Also available is Quattro all-wheel drive.
Audi’s virtual cockpit will be available in the new Sportback as well as a high-resolution 12.3in TFT screen. All models get Xenon headlamps, Audi MMI radio with 7.0in display and Bluetooth.
The A5 and S5 Sportback are expected to go on sale in early 2017 with specifications and prices yet to be announced.
