Hyundai IONIQ is charged and ready to go
Hyundai’s five-door family electric car comes with three powertrains and goes on sale in October 2016, priced from £19,995
The countdown is on for Hyundai’s all-new and revolutionary IONIQ family-sized electric car. The five-door hatchback will be offered with three electrified powertrains, a world first, with sales starting in mid-October 2016 where it will battle the Toyota Prius, Nissan Leaf and BMW i3.
There's a petrol-electric hybrid, a fully electric version and a hybrid plug-in, called the IONIQ Hybrid, IONIQ Electric and IONIQ Plug-in, respectively.
The hybrid and plug-in us the same powertrain, a 1.6-litre GDI four-cylinder petrol engine connected to a six-speed double clutch automatic gearbox and twinned with a 34KW electric motor with an 8.9 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery. The two power units combined to generate 139bhp and 195lb ft, meaning the hybrid will get from 0-62mph in 10.8 seconds with the Plug-in taking 11.1 seconds.
As a hybrid it'll return 83.1mpg over a combined cycle and emit 79g/km of CO2 with the plug-in recording 70.6mpg and 92g/km, respectively. The Plug-in, however can travel up to 31 miles on electric power alone.
In electric mode only, the IONIQ Electric's motor generates 118bhp and 218lb ft and is powered by a lithium-ion-polymer battery with 1.56 kWh, which is stored under the rear seats. The Electric will get from 0-62mph in a time of 9.9 seconds and has a maximum range of 174 miles. Using a 50kW rapid charger, it can be recharged up to 80% in 33 minutes but you can also recharge from a domestic three-pin plug.
Designed to be streamline through the air, the IONIQ has body panels which can flex and helps it achieve a class-leading aerodynamics Cd of 0.24.
The Hybrid is available in SE, Premium and Premium SE trim, while the Electric comes in Premium and Premium SE.
SE trimmed cars get 15in alloy wheels, DAB radio, Bluetooth, cruise control, rear parking sensors and a rear view camera. Standard safety includes autonomous emergency braking and lane assist.
Premium adds to the SE’s equipment with keyless entry, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, Bi-Xenon headlamps with LED taillights. There’s also a 7.0in LCD display, TomTom sat nav and Android Auto / Apple CarPlay.
Premium SE further adds leather seats, electrically-powered driver’s seat, heated & ventilated front seats and heated outer rear seats, a heated leather steering wheel, front parking sensors and blind spot detection with rear cross traffic alert.
There are seven external paint colours to choose from including; black, white, silver, grey, brown, blue and orange. Inside gets a lava stone finish with blue accents throughout the cabin and on the dashboard.
IONIQ Electric
Premium spec is based on the Hybrid Premium, so it gets 16in alloy wheels, sat nav, auto windscreen wipers, LED headlamps and taillights, and adaptive cruise control.
Premium SE, is based on the Hybrid Premium SE and includes 16in alloy wheels, leather seats, heated and ventilated front seats, heated outer rear seats, a heated leather steering wheel, front parking sensors and blind spot detection.
The IONIQ Electric is available in white, black, blue, orange and exclusive yellow exterior paint colours. Inside, the lava stone trim features copper accents throughout the cabin and dashboard.
IONIQ Plug-In
The Plug-in trims will be announced nearer to its launch in 2017.
All IONIQ models get Hyundai’s five-year unlimited-mileage warranty, with eight-years / 125,000 miles cover for the high voltage battery.
IONIQ Hybrid goes fully on sale from 13 October 2016, with a partial launch of the IONIQ Electric at the same time as it will be available from 27 dealerships, with a full dealership rollout from 2017. The Plug-in will follow in 2017.
