2017 VW Beetle coupe and cabriolet details announced
Volkswagen has confirmed the prices and specifications for the facelifted Beetle coupe and cabriolet.
The Volkswagen Beetle is getting a mid-life refresh for 2016 with styling tweaks, revised trim levels, new technology and a slight name change.
From now on, the three-door version will be known as the coupe while the open-top continues as the cabriolet, all of which are available in four trims levels; Beetle, Design, R-Line and Dune.
The existing four-engine lineup continues unchanged. There are new colour choices for the fabric cabriolet roof and new special editions and styling packs available.
Exterior styling changes are focused on the redesigned front bumper, with a larger revised air inlet helping the Beetle appear wider. Under the bonnet is a new narrow air inlet, which extends between the headlights. There’s also some added black trim on the bumpers and around the wheel arches (on some trims), which has a gloss finish on the R-Line and Denim and matt on the Dune.
At the back, the taillights have been smoked (darkened) and the rear bumper has been revised, with added black trim featuring in the central and lower parts, including the rear diffuser. You can now choose from 12 paint colours and the fabric roof on the cabriolet can be chosen in black or beige.
On the inside, the design is unchanged but there are new colours and materials. The dashboard and bottom of the steering wheel are now both coloured the same as the trim inserts. There’s a revised design to the instrument dials as well as adjustable ambient lighting and a new fabric for the seats.
The entry-level Beetle comes with fabric comfort seats, air conditioning, Bluetooth, DAB radio, a black dashboard, six-airbags, split folding rear seats, post-collision braking and hill hold assist. Convertible models get an electrically operated fabric roof and active rollover protection system.
Mid-level Design trim gets 17in alloys, black air inlet grille with chrome strips, body-coloured side guards with chrome trim strip and fog lights with cornering light. Inside there’s a 6.5-inch colour touch-screen, a grey metallic coloured dash, leather trimmed gear knob and handbrake grip and leather multifunctional steering wheel.
Top trim level R-Line adds 18in alloys, ‘R-Line’ design front and rear bumpers, rear tailgate spoiler and rear tinted glass. Inside you get two-zone electronic climate control, a black gloss dash, aluminium-look pedals and front and rear parking sensors.
The rugged looking Dune gets 18in alloys, a ride height raised by 10mm, rear LED lights along with individual bumper designs and decals. Inside there’s air conditioning, automatic wipers, parking sensors and cruise control.
There are two petrol and two diesel engines to choose from, all of which are available with an optional six or seven-speed automatic gearbox. The petrol line-up consists of a 1.2-litre TSI with 104bhp and a 1.4-litre TSI with 148bhp. Those after a diesel can pick from two versions of a 2.0-litre TDI, tuned to develop either 109bhp or 148bhp.
Looking to further individualise your Beetle coupe or cabriolet, available from the options list is a sat nav system, keyless entry and start, Bi-xenon headlights, parking sensors and a Fender premium soundpack.
The Beetle has a three year, 60,000-mile warranty.
Prices £16,820 for the 1.2-litre Beetle, rising to £28,545 for the 2.0-litre TDI Dune Cabriolet. It’s on sale now with deliveries expected to start in September 2016.
